Description
Antique Staffordshire black spaniel dog statue pair. - Stunning Staffordshire dog mantle figures within unusual high gloss black finish and size. Classic style with deep moulding lines perfect for adding a timeless English aesthetic to any setting. - Staffordshire dog figurines are matching pairs of pottery spaniel dogs, standing guard, which were habitually placed on mantelpieces in 19th-century homes. Mainly manufactured in Staffordshire pottery, these earthenware figures were also made in other English counties and in Scotland. They are also known as hearth spaniels or fireplace dogs as they were positioned on top of the mantelpiece. Many other breeds were produced, particularly the greyhound, though the spaniels were especially popular and this is attributed to royalty favoring the King Charles Spaniel breed. - Guaranteed authentic Victorian era dogs, from a significant collection of 19th century British antiques. Firing holes on back right for pieces of this age. - Good condition for age. There has been some surface wear expected with age, with the gilt details now largely worn off and the black irises of one dog worn. There is a small chip on the nose of one dog (see close up). See photos for more detail. Measurements: 9" x 6 /4" x 5"
