Staffordshire Girl seated on dog This gorgeous piece has a note to bottom which reads "To Caroline M. VanSickle when she was five years old in the year of 1849. To Lloyd Lefever from Aunt LoElla". The note looks to be original mid 19th Century. Mid 19th Century. Measures approx. 7"H X 5" W. Provenance: Prominent Private New York Collection Documentation: Harding Victorian Staffordshire, Book 2, p. 145, Figure 2231/2232 Condition: Missing bottom, crack and chip to back, discoloration, otherwise minor imperfections to be expected The Spaniel Dogs, were a staple of the Victorian household and assimilate just as well in a present day. The origin or inspiration is thought to be the pet King Charles Spaniel "Dash", kept by Queen Victoria, as a child, who became her contest component when she became Queen. The first Spaniels appeared at the beginning of the 1840's and continued in production into the 1900's.
