Description

Pair Staffordshire Children with dogs and snake This gorgeous pair of Spaniels with children are most likely an original matched pair. Unique paint and complex modeling which depicts a boy being protected from a snake by dog. Mid to late 19th Century. Measures approx. 8"H X 7" W. Provenance: Prominent Private New York Collection Documentation: Harding Victorian Staffordshire, Second Addendum, p. 287, Figure 2297a Condition: Paint loss, crazing, reglued snout of one dog, minor touch ups to chipping on base, otherwise minor imperfections to be expected. The Spaniel Dogs, were a staple of the Victorian household and assimilate just as well in a present day. The origin or inspiration is thought to be the pet King Charles Spaniel "Dash", kept by Queen Victoria, as a child, who became her contest component when she became Queen. The first Spaniels appeared at the beginning of the 1840's and continued in production into the 1900's.
